General Notes About the Library

The books that I list in the library section of this site are from my own personal collection. There may be others available on the topic that do better justice to the subject than the ones I have listed, but if they are not in my library they won’t get a mention.

I have been collecting books on the subject of living a more sustainable and self reliant life for over 30 years (it’s one of the advantages of being old!) and so some of the books that I list will be well out of print. Some of them even I picked up after they had gone well out of print, so if I refer to a book that you would love to have but is out of print, don’t give up hope.

It is worth hanging around second hand book sales and second hand book shops, you never know what you will come up with. I recently bought a book from the local St Vinnies that I have been chasing for years, for the princely sum of $1. Today, however, we have a wonderfully powerful book finding tool: the internet. Try searching for the ISBN number if you don’t do any good with other searches, I have included the ISBN number for the books I refer to so you can do that.

Even if the book(s) you want are no longer available in your local area or country even, you still may be able to track them down overseas. Another option is to look for an e-book version because there are sites out there, like the Guttenberg Project, where many old books have been converted to PDF and are available free of charge or for a small fee.

We can’t know everything and the right books can help bridge the gaps in our knowledge, and to live more sustainably and self reliantly, we need to know stuff. It takes little or no knowledge to plug in an electric cord, turn on a tap or get a feed from MacDonald’s, but if we want to provide services for ourselves and reduce our reliance on the system, we do need to know stuff.

There are a whole stack of great books out there on all of the subjects you can find on this site that will help you to live a more sustainable and self reliant life so get out there and start reading! Good luck!
