Under the Choko Tree By Nevin Sweeney

Choko Tree Friends - Roberta

Roberta lives in a 1950s fibro cottage in Western Sydney near Blacktown, her block is 917m2 and has a North Easterly aspect with the house towards the front of the block. While she has been gardening there since she moved in 18 years ago it has been the last 4 years that she has been seriously into producing her own food.

She is in the process of creating an urban sustainable food forest with Permaculture elements such as keyhole gardens, banana circle and pet tractor. Her main interest is food which grows underground; tubers, roots and corms that can be used directly from the ground with little need to worry about storage and preservation techniques. They add spice and starch to her diet as well as vitamins and minerals.

Roberta is a trained horticulturist and permaculturist and is involved in Permaculture Sydney West, she runs sustainable living workshops and opens for Permaculture day most years. She also hosts WWOOFers (Willing Workers On Organic Farms).

She keeps sustainable pets; chooks, quail, ducks, guinea pigs and a rabbit which she feeds on wild plants and weeds gathered from her garden and elsewhere so that only a small selection of concentrates needs to be bought in to feed them.
