Under the Choko Tree By Nevin Sweeney

Choko Tree Friends - Glenda

Glenda lives in one of the original cottages of the area in Western Sydney near Baulkham Hills, her block is about 900m2 and has a North Easterly aspect with the house towards the front of the block and was built using passive solar principles. The cottage is double brick has verandas and plenty of cross ventilation.

She has only been in the house a little over 12 months but in that time she has sought to transform manicured lawn and topiary into a productive food garden with the help of her family and friends. She has also installed an evacuated tube solar hot water system and 3.9 back-to-the-grid photovoltaic system which produces more than enough electricity to meet her needs.

She is a member of Permaculture Sydney West and recently was given a permablitz to help her move on towards her goal of living more sustainably which has come on top of her already hard work making the site more sustainable.

She has 7 chooks in a chook run down the back yard as well as raised vegetable beds and vegetables and herbs in containers. There are a number of fruit trees including a very productive orange and she has a choko growing over the chook shed that was donated by under the choko tree. There are lots more on her to-do list including a worm bath and aquaponics system.
