Under the Choko Tree By Nevin Sweeney

Choko Tree Friends - Sandra and Tom

Sandra and Tom live in a hilly suburb in northern Sydney which has been their home for the past 12 years, and when they moved to the house the gardens consisted of non-productive lawns and ornamentals.

The block is 650 square metres and has a northerly aspect but is quite steep, sloping down from the front of the block to the back as well as having quite a few large trees on their and their neighbour’s properties resulting in significant shading.  These factors have had a major influence on the way that they have designed their block.

There are some fruit trees in the back yard with more on the way as well as chooks but due to the shading issues, particularly in winter, they need to make use of their front yard to grow fruit, vegetables and herbs with some reliance on containers which can be moved to catch the sun.

They have obviously put a lot of work into the yard to get it to be as productive as it is and work is ongoing so they can produce as much of their own food as they can. We wish them the best of luck.
