Making a Candle Holder from a PET Bottle

By Kevin Mechelmans

During the evening of earth hour, we were discussing what to use instead of our normal lights, we had stick candles but nothing to put them on/in, so my wife wondered if we could use the multitude of PET bottles I’d been saving to use for other projects, thus my original PET candle holder was born.

What you need for my PET Mini candle holder Mk. I (The Original)

1x 390ml PET bottle, if not empty please do so before cutting to size.
1x small nail (mine worked fine without the nail)
And that’s it.
Tools
- Scissors
- Hammer

Next cut the top of the bottle where it meets the label, do the same for the bottom piece, discard the piece with the label. Insert the nail through the bottle cap with the rim on the bottom (optional). Screw the cap back onto the top piece.

Mount the top upside down into the bottom part, they should fit snugly, otherwise you’ll have the candle swaying around, which could be interesting, if you enjoy the sight of your house burning down…

And that’s it! Insert candle, light candle, and enjoy!

What you need for my PET candle holder Mk. I
1x 1.5l PET bottle (mine was a woolies brand cola)
1x small nail
Tools
- Scissors
- Hammer

Next cut the top of the bottle about 25mm (1 inch) from where it meets the label, cut the bottom piece where it meets the label, discard the centre piece. Insert the nail through the bottle cap with the rim on the bottom (I did use a nail for this version). Screw the cap back onto the top piece.

Mount the top upside down into the bottom part, they should fit snugly for the same reasons mentioned above, and finished.

What you need for my PET Mini candle holder Mk. II
1x 390ml PET bottle
1x small nail
Tools
- Scissors
- Hammer

Next cut the top of the bottle where it meets the label, do the same for the bottom piece, discard the piece with the label. Insert the nail through the bottle cap with the rim on the bottom . Screw the cap back onto the top piece.

Mount the top into the bottom part with the cap up as shown in the photo snugness is not as much of an issue as the floor area is now larger, you will need the nail otherwise you’ll chance having the candle fall over, which once again is a bad thing for reasons explained in previous versions.

What you need for my PET candle holder Mk. III
1x 1.5l PET bottle (mine once again was a woolies brand cola)
1x small nail
Tools
- Scissors
- Hammer

Next cut the top of the bottle about 25mm (1 inch) from where it meets the label, the top has to fit inside the bottom, cut the bottom piece where it meets the label, discard the centre piece. Insert the nail through the bottle cap with the rim on the bottom. Screw the cap back onto the top piece.

Mount the top into the bottom part with the cap up and voila, finished.

Lights On

Lights off!
