Things have progressed on the St Clair Primary Permaculture design and they have moved passed the basic design that I did and now even include a chook run. We use our chook tractor extensively but this approach does not suit everyone and sometimes a static run is the best way to construct things. Juanita works there helping out with gardening and teaching the kids about growing stuff, and she designed and built this little gem out of entirely recycled materials, with the exception of the school fencing and posts.
The wire sides and roof are made from scavenged wire mesh, the outside run is partitioned off with old pallets and there is an inner area where chicks are brooded by a broody hen that is section off from the rest of the run by recycled pool fencing and scavenged wire. The nesting boxes, some perches and shelter from the weather are made from recycled wooden boxes that have been used to bring machinery into the country. Even the catches on the gate are made from repurposed springs, picked up along a roadside.
This is a great example of what can be accomplished with a few resources and some intelligent design work to make the best use of them.
