Shaving Oils

By Kevin Mechelmans

It’s really easy and takes seconds to do. Here’s what you’ll need:

Equipment

Drinking Glass
Glass bottle for storage
Funnel (not essential but helps)

Ingredients

4 tablespoons (60ml) of Base Oil - choose from:
Grape seed oil
Olive oil
Jojoba oil
10 drops of Essential Oil - choose from:
Peppermint
Lavender
Tea tree

Method

Pour your oil in to the drinking glass. Add your drops. Give it a good stir.
Shaving oil for men: 5 drops of tea tree oil and 5 drops of peppermint
Shaving oil for women: 5 drops of tea tree oil and 5 drops of lavender oil.
Pour into your bottle and you’re done!

The main reason I attempted to make my own shaving oil was because I had enough of having to pay $10+ for a 10ml bottle of shaving oil! I mainly use shaving oil due to my easily irritated skin. So I made three batches of shaving oils, one for my wife with lavender oil, one for my sister in law Angela with orange oil, and once for me with peppermint oil, I was on a roll so I made three… The original recipe was made with olive oil, I have substituted that with grape seed oil, as it feels less oily and has little to no scent.

So how well did it work? Well I used both mine and my wife’s batch quite happily and successfully for a very long period of time, about 6 months per jar. Keep in mind you’d only use a few drops per shave. My wife preferred to use her trusted and highly expensive venus whatchamacallit contraption razor thingy. My sister in law Angela I assume had the same misgivings even though she theatrically seemed excited and interested, somehow I think they are on to me... I have given up on arsenic.

Maybe ricin.

NOTES
I have used chocolate essential/flavour oils for most of the recipes to make it simple and who doesn’t want their partner to smell/taste like chocolate, but you could use any essential/flavour oil you like the smell of. You could also add tea tree oil to most of the recipes. Tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic, anti-fungal and anaesthetic, adding a drop or two could be beneficial. Might change the fragrance though. Use brown coloured glass jars or bottles for the aftershave oils and shaving oils, and keep them out of direct sunlight.

A word of caution - use of some essential oils are not advised when you have particular medical conditions such as Hypertension or if you are pregnant. Make sure you always check first.
