Kim lives in the Hills district of Sydney, on a 740m2 block and has been there since 2007. There is no grass in the front yard or the verge, the whole area has been wood chip mulched and planted out with natives and ornamental trees and shrubs.
The house is double glazed throughout, with a 4000 litre rainwater tank and a 6.4kW tesla battery and 4kW of solar panels.
The backyard is a food forest, with the following fruiting plants – mulberry, olive (x2), nectarine, peach, lilly pilly (x10), tangelo, lemon, cumquat, Valencia orange, fig, macadamia, grape and passionfruit. Most of the backyard is covered with wood chip mulch (36 cubic metres worth) and there also a comprehensive chook yard.
There are two raised wicking beds reserved for annual veg, awaiting to be cleaned up and planted out with this season’s crops.
With all of this there is very little area left for grass, only a few square metres under the clothesline. It is such a wonderfully productive space, right in the middle of the suburbs!

If you are looking for lawn, this is all you get!
The small amount of grass clippings that are produced are fed to the chooks.
